Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone has an inhibitory effect on tyrosinase, the enzyme catalyzing the most important step in melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that causes the skin to darken.
Retinol
Retinol functions in this formula as a mild irritant to facilitate the epidermal penetration of hydroquinone and to the signs of sun-damaged skin. Clinical studies have shown that retinol penetrates into the dermis, increases collagen, normalizes elastin and melanin production, and increases cellular turnover.
Kojic Acid
Kojic acid is a mild pigmentation inhibitor in plant and animal tissues, and is used in food and cosmetics to preserve or change colors of substances. It can work synergistically with hydroquinone, to give optimal results.
Hydrocortisone
Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid that can eliminate the irritation that might be caused by either hydroquinone or retinoic acid.
